Hamsters belong to the rodent subfamily cricetinae. They are well-known house pets and also used as experimental animals. In the wild, they live in nest holes in dry regions from Europe to Asia. Wild hamsters are few in number, and are considered endangered. Nocturnal animals, they have a thick fur coat and primarily eat fruits and nuts.
